On December 19, 2017, Prime-Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Sapar Isakov, and Charge d’Affaires of the United States Alan Meltzer opened the annual conference “Assessment of Interaction between Public Councils and Government Bodies in 2017”. The event was held by the Public Councils of the State Bodies, with the support of the USAID Collaborative Governance Program and the participation of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic. The conference brought together over 150 people including members of public councils, ministers, members of Parliament, and representatives of international and civil society organizations, and media. The participants of the conference were familiarized with the Country’s Development Strategy for 2020-2040, activities of the Public Councils in 2017, and discussed the draft Law on Amendments to the Law “On Public Councils”. USAID supports the Annual Conference as it serves as a platform for Public Councils to raise the issue of the role of civil society organizations - as stated by Prime-Minister in his speech - “in building a democratic, secular, unitary state, where the rights of each person will be protected by the state as much as possible with a large role assigned to the civil society sector, including Public Councils of State Bodies.”

Public councils are consultative and supervisory bodies created on a voluntary basis of representatives of civil society for interaction and cooperation with state bodies, as well as for public monitoring of their activities.

The conference was widely covered by the media, including KTRK TV news: http://www.ktrk.kg/post/18142/ru
