On September 22-23, 2016 the NPM Resource Center based at the Kyrgyz National University hosted a two-day Professional Development Workshop for 23 professors from 11 Consortium Universities, who got together for  planning and designing the 5th NPM course on the theme “The Rule of Law and Nonprofit Sector”. Local trainer and consultant Zaure Sydykova, who conducted the workshop, highlighted the cutting edge and complex character of the course, which is also aimed at deeper understanding of the civic duties by students and support in searching the effective ways of positive transformations in political and social environment of the country. The trainer outlined the course objectives which include: understanding of the essence and composition of the rule of law concept; inalienable rights and freedoms of an individual and citizen, and guaranteeing their realization; as well as the role of nonprofit sector in pursuit of public interest by providing the rule of law and lawfulness. During the workshop, representatives of the Public Foundation “Adilet” and USAID CGP Legal Consultant, Meder Dostanbekov, shared their practical experience in the area of promotion of the rule of law in Kyrgyzstan.

The PDW was alive with heated discussions on available and prospective repressive/preventive mechanisms that will help to fight corruption and related state of mind as main hindrances on the way to the state based on the principles of division of powers, rule of law, justice, and integrity. Obviously, the role of the civil sector is indispensable in preparing new generation of experts for improving the legislative framework of the state as well as in supporting individual social and political initiatives. The participants also discussed the accountability of the NPO sector itself - not only before the donors but beneficiaries and society as a whole. The rule of law and division of power principle inside nonprofit organizations stands as a basis for their fruitful activities and achievements.

Finally, the Consortium professors formed groups that will be working on the parts of the new syllabus “The rule of law and nonprofit sector”. We wish them good luck and looking forward for the results!
