On October 21, 2016, over 40 participants, including students, professors and CSO representatives, attended a Guest Lecture of UN Women Rural Women’s Economic Empowerment Program Manager in the Kyrgyz Republic, Jypara Turmamatova, on the theme “Gender and Sustainable Development” at the Nonprofit Management Resource Center at Kyrgyz National University. The lecture was devoted to familiarizing participants with the new global agenda for sustainable development up to 2030, as well as ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and girls in the development of Kyrgyzstan. Students took part in a quiz on the status and role of women in global development as well as an interactive game in which they gained a deeper understanding of the importance of gender factor in defining potential opportunities and further achievements of every individual and citizen. The lecture continued with showing a part of the documentary prepared as part of the Study on Gender in Society Perceptions followed by a discussion on what each individual can do to ensure gender equality in Kyrgyzstan.

As part of the question and answer session, the lecturer and the participants exchanged their views on the current situation in the field of gender equality in the Kyrgyz Republic; effectiveness of the existing legislation on women's rights, in particular, on prevention of "bride kindnapping"; the need to raise public awareness about the existing problems and challenges; and the role of the women's movement and civil society in addressing gender issues and ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and girls at the national and local levels.
