On December 19, 2016, a press conference was organized at the Ministry of Justice with participation of the representatives of the Ministry of Justice, UNDP, EU, Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan, and USAID Collaborative Governance Program. This meeting was organized to share results of the decade on free legal aid, which was conducted countrywide during the period November 17 - December 17. During the decade, 4 576 people received free legal consultations.

As a result of the Decade, it has been identified that the following questions were frequently raised by Kyrgyz citizens:

  • Questions on registration of appeals to courts and law enforcement agencies;
  • Issues with registration of land, housing and property;
  • Issues on employment, illegal dismissal and unpaid wages;
  • Questions on how to resolve family disputes;
  • Issues with registration of marriages, child birth, and receiving different types of registration documents.

The main goal of the Decade was to raise the awareness of the general population with the focus on vulnerable groups on the opportunities for free legal aid and the resources available to assist in locating legal information. During the decade, different public outreach materials, including brochures, posters, booklets, video PSA, and news publications online were available for citizens as well as TV talk-shows and guest lectures at major Universities.

 The Decade on free legal aid was implemented by the Ministry of Justice of the Kyrgyz Republic in partnership with the European Union project "Promoting the Rule of Law in the Kyrgyz Republic", GIZ program "Promoting the rule of law in Central Asia," the Legal Program of Soros Foundation – Kyrgyzstan, UNDP and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland "Improving access to justice in the Kyrgyz Republic", and USAID Collaborative Governance Program.
